Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate spider veins or thread veins. Sclerotherapy involves small injections of a solution (generally salt solution) directly into the vessel which irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing the vein wall to adhere, breakdown and reduce the supply of oxygen reducing the appearance of the vein. Sclerotherapy is an effective technique to obliterate or collapse veins.
Other techniques such as laser treatment can also be used to treat small thread veins.
