Spot On: The Truth About Acne

Having acne can be so debilitating on your self-esteem and very painful, and it’s quite common to get acne as an adult rather than a teen! Acne can affect up to 20% of adults aged 25 to 39.

Just when you thought you were out of the spotty teenage era, you’re right back in there.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to help! Chemical peels and homecare are your best starting point. This will treat the acne at a deeper level in clinic, and keeping any new spots at bay at home.

We have two peels in clinic that contain salicylic acid, Obagi Blue Peel Radiance, and SkinMed SA Peel. Both are great for acne, oil production and spot prone skin. You can discuss which one will be best with your practitioner.

One of the best ingredients for acne is Salicylic acid, and this is because it is great at controlling acne spots, when used at home and professionally. Salicylic helps by calming inflammation, reducing oil production and unclogging pores. Products such as Alumier Bright & Clear solution, Clarifying serum, or Obagi Pore Therapy both contain salicylic acid.

Retinols, which are vitamin A, will also help with unclogging pores, help to fade acne scars and discolouration too, win win!

Here are some tips for helping with acne:

Don’t forget to moisturise! It’s always been a bit of a myth, ‘just wash your face’ or ‘dry your skin out’. Neither of these will help acne, and excessively washing or drying your skin out can actually lead to more oil, and more spots.

Be gentle with your skin, try not to cleanse or scrub too hard as it can irritate your skin.

SPF always! Wearing SPF regularly will help with post-inflammatory hyper-pigment, which are the little discoloured bits of skin you get after having a spot.

Changing pillowcases regularly, as this can help stop bacterial infection

Don’t pop them, this can sometimes push the infection in deeper.

If you are suffering with spotty or acne prone skin, don’t hesitate to get in touch, and we can start you on your skin care journey.
